P21 - U-RISE at Marquette: Supporting Underrepresented Student Entry into Biomedical-Related PhD Programs Using Research-Focused Professional Development and an Ecosystem of Mentoring
Associate Dean of Academic Affairs, College of Health Sciences Marquette University Milwaukee, Wisconsin, United States
Program Abstract: U-RISE at Marquette aims to reduce disparities in entry into biomedical-related PhD programs for underrepresented students through activities to enhance participation in undergraduate research along with professional development within a supportive mentoring ecosystem. Underrepresented junior-level students are financially supported for 2 years to conduct on-campus academic year research. In addition students participate in a culturally validated curriculum within a mentoring ecosystem where members provide consistent yet unique direction, feedback and perspectives to U-RISE students as they participate in further professional development and prepare materials on the path to becoming PhD candidates. To date 12 of 13 students, 100% underrepresented in biomedical research, have secured and participated in on campus research. Students report high satisfaction with their research experience particularly in research sponsorship. All students are on track to graduate or have graduated in a biomedical-related field with 100% of graduated students enrolled in a biomedical graduate or fellowship program.
