Dr. Angela Frey became Associate Dean for Academic Affairs in the College of Health Sciences at Marquette University in August 2023. At Marquette she is co-PI of Marquette’s NIH U-RISE training grant to increase underrepresented student enrollment in biomedical PhD programs using mentored academic and summer research along with constellation mentoring and professional development. She was also on the design team and is the co-PI of a current NSF IUSE award, PERSIST: Positionality Empowerment Realizes Success in STEM. PERSIST aims to increase retention in STEM of students from racial/ethnic backgrounds historically underrepresented students through a pipeline of activities that promote STEM identity and belonging through reflecting on one’s own background (positionality) and how personal experiences are an asset to success in STEM. Prior to her position at Marquette she was the Executive Director for the Center for Academic Excellence and Professor of Biology at Alverno College, a women’s college and HSI. At Alverno Dr. Frey led development of AIMS, Alverno Initiatives in Mathematics and Science, a set of projects engaging students in cross-disciplinary activities outside the classroom to encourage a community of learners and build STEM identity particularly for students traditionally underrepresented in STEM. As part of AIMS, Dr. Frey designed and managed several NSF-funded projects including serving as PI of NSF S-STEM and NSF IUSE HSI projects and as the campus representative and small grant holder to the Wisconsin Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (WiscLSAMP). She also directed the growth of STEM summer research on Alverno’s campus, was a member of the leadership team of USDA HSI Education grant and a member of the design team for Alverno’s 2023 NASA MERUP WCU award.
