W17 - Implementing An Ungrading Approach Into Your Classroom

Program Abstract: An ungrading approach emphasizes frequent detailed feedback on student's learning over numerical scores and grades. This approach has been implemented in a wide range of disciplines but is not widely adopted in STEM. The goal of this workshop is to provide time and resources for interested instructors to adopt an ungrading approach in some portion of their course and to leave with a clearer understanding of implementing the ungrading method into their course. An overview of the ungrading approach and how it has been applied in our courses will be presented. Participants will work in small groups to discuss concerns and hesitations about ungrading adoption along with adjusting their individual course resource to an ungrading format. Participants are asked to bring in possible course materials or ideas they wish to consider for transition to ungrading during this workshop.
