Educational Developer George Mason University, United States
Program Abstract: In the era of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) (i.e., ChapGPT), STEM educators have the challenge of updating their assessments due to the advancement of this emerging technology. While GenAI offers new opportunities, it also necessitates a reevaluation of traditional assessment methods. In this workshop, participants will review Bloom’s taxonomy as a framework for assessing current capabilities and limitations of GenAI. Through interactive exercises, participants will explore strategies for updating assessments such as exams, and projects for in-person and online learning environments. Authentic assessments, such as alternatives to traditional exams, will also be explored as a way to prepare students for a workforce that both utilizes and restricts GenAI. Participants will leave with an action plan for revising at least one high stakes assessment for their course. This workshop is based on a session that was originally part of a GenAI Faculty Learning Community for STEM Faculty at George Mason University.
