Kalyn Shea Owens is currently serving as a rotating Program Director at the National Science Foundation in the Directorate of STEM Education (EDU), Division of Undergraduate Education (DUE). In this role, Dr. Owens had the opportunity to launch and then lead the recently published Innovation in Two-Year College STEM Education (ITYC) program, which was specifically created to harness the STEM talent and potential found at two-year colleges across the nation. She also works as a Program Director on a range of other programs including ATE, IUSE, S-STEM and ExLENT. Kalyn earned her Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of California Davis. She then transitioned to chemical education research in a research associate position in the College of Education at the University of Washington. Prior to joining NSF in September of 2021, Kalyn was a Professor and Chair of Chemistry at North Seattle College where she taught a range of chemistry courses, engaged in research focused on designing interdisciplinary and investigative STEM curriculum, explored how early research experiences promote equity and inclusion, and has been involved in the national effort to develop models for implementing undergraduate research experiences at two-year colleges.
