Gonzales is Professor in and Director of the Center for the Study of Higher Education and Department Head for the Educational Policy Studies and Practice Department at the University of Arizona. Prior to joining the University of Arizona, Gonzales was Professor at Michigan State University, where she also served as a Faculty Advocate. Gonzales is an expert in the study of faculty careers, organizational change and development, and leadership. Using sociological, cultural, and interdisciplinary perspectives, Gonzales examines how academia’s rules, routines, and norms shape the personal experiences and professional outcomes of faculty of color, especially women of color. Gonzales has been published in top-tier outlets within the higher education field, has obtained competitive grants from the National Science Foundation, and has served in national leadership roles for her field’s scholarly associations. Gonzales earned all three degrees from Hispanic Serving Institutions, including New Mexico Highlands University and University of Texas El Paso.
