Debra McLaughlin earned a B.S. in Physics with Honors from Clark-Atlanta University and holds a Ph.D. in Neurobiology and Physiology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She has authored/co-authored 12 articles in peer-reviewed science journals, three book chapters, three technical reports, and delivered five invited presentations and 33 scientific and educational presentations. Dr. McLaughlin has authored seven college-level courses including integrated anatomy and physiology for medical students, neurobiology, human motivation, natural sciences laboratory, and co-authored two collaborative online introductory biology courses with a nation-wide faculty team. She teaches a range of courses across multiple disciplines including introductory physical sciences, natural sciences laboratory, nutrition lecture and laboratory, biological basis of behavior, human motivation, and anatomy and physiology. She serves as a reviewer for four journals and has received credit as a reviewer for three science textbooks. Currently, Dr. McLaughlin serves on several UMGC committees including, but not limited to, the Curriculum Council Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee and the General Education Reimagining Committee. She serves on the leadership committee of the Baltimore Section of the American Society for Quality (ASQ) and has earned national certifications as an OSHA Professional, VR Educator (VictoryXR), and Certified Manager of Quality/Organizational Excellence (American Society for Quality). For more than 15 years, Dr. McLaughlin has served as a consultant for the American Council on Education (ACE). She uses data analytics to manage program portfolios and has managed course inventories of up to 56 courses and annual enrollments of more than 18,000 students.
