Suzanne Sumner, Professor of Mathematics at the University of Mary Washington, earned her Ph.D. and M.S. from North Carolina State University. Dr. Sumner earned her B.S. at the University of North Carolina, where she was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa.
From 2003 to 2008, Dr. Sumner served as Director of the Teaching Innovation Program at UMW. Dr. Sumner was named a Project Kaleidoscope Village Elder, and she was on the advisory board for the Teaching Professor Conference. In 2020 Dr. Sumner was appointed to the Board of Directors for the Gladys Oberle Special Education Academy.
Dr. Sumner is the Co-President of the Beta Eta Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma, an international honorary society for women educators. She is currently the Chair of the DKG Virginia Scholars Award Program and on the DKG Virginia State Nominating Committee.
Dr. Sumner’s interdisciplinary research and pedagogical collaborations connect mathematics with biology, classics, environmental science, geology, and philosophy. Dr. Sumner is a recipient of seven teaching awards during her years at NCSU and UMW.
