Deborah A O'Dell, PhD is a Professor of Biological Sciences at University of Mary Washington (UMW) in Fredericksburg, Virginia. She received her B.S in Biology from Ursinus College in 1979, and her PhD. in Cellular andDevelopmental Biology from SUNY Stony Brook in 1985. She was awarded an NIH Postdoctoral fellowship for work at Cambridge University, England (1985-1987) and was selected as the Trevelyan Research Fellow by Selwyn College, Cambridge (1987-1988). Prior to joining UMW she taught Biology at Indiana University Southeast, and at the University of Nevada at Reno. She joined the faculty at UMW in 1992 as Assistant Professor of Biological Sciences, was awarded tenure in 1998, and promotion to Full Professor in 2016. She currently teaches major courses in Cellular Biology and Neurobiology and performs research into the cellular mechanisms of Alzheimer's Disease and environmental effects on gene expression in nervous tissue. She was elected a Fellow of the Virginia Academy of Science in 2015.
Her interest in helping students with career planning started with a Departmental Career series in 2004. She became a Faculty Fellow in the Center for Career and Professional Development in 2014, and in 2021 accepted the position of University PreHealth Advisor. She is part of the Faculty Development Team for the UMW's recent QEP on Life After Mary Washington helping faculty identify career competencies in their classes, and teaches "Preparation for Healthcare careers" a class that meets the UMW general education requirement After Mary Washington (AMW) for students interested in Healthcare careers.
