Erica Gerace, PhD is a Program Manager for Genomic Education and Experiential Learning at The Jackson Laboratory (JAX) for Genomic Medicine in Farmington, Connecticut. As a scientist educator Erica's overall career goal is to improve how we teach science and to increase access and equity in STEM education. With a PhD in biomedical sciences from Harvard University and postdoctoral training at the University of Melbourne (Australia), Erica studied epigenetic inheritance in disease models, and has laboratory expertise in molecular biology, biochemistry, and model organisms. As a teaching professor at Georgetown University, she incorporated authentic experiments and used interdisciplinary approaches to illustrate biological concepts and the scientific process. Erica developed a course based undergraduate research experience (CURE) in molecular genetics and assessed the effectiveness of this pedagogical intervention. Currently at JAX, she designs curriculum and has authored and developed a range of in-person and digital experiences for audiences including high school students and undergraduates. Erica manages the Summer Student Program, a 10-week mentored research experience for undergraduates, in Farmington, CT and leads the design and instruction for a virtual short course for undergraduates offered every summer.
