Dr. Shadreck Chitsonga has been a professor of mathematics at Palm Beach State College since 2018, where he also serves as the Department Chair for Developmental Mathematics. Prior to this role, he was a tenured associate professor of mathematics at Fort Valley State University, where he coordinated the Precalculus and Statistics programs.
Dr. Chitsonga holds a Ph.D. in Mathematics Education from the University of Georgia and a Bachelor of Education in Mathematics from the University of Malawi. He has extensive teaching experience, teaching high school mathematics in Malawi, Botswana, and the United States.
In 2014, he was a Co-Principal Investigator for a National Science Foundation (NSF) Targeted Infusion Project that secured $469,552 in funding to establish the first minor in Statistics at Fort Valley State University. He also served as Co-PI on an $80,000 Textbook Transformation Project in 2016 and 2018, successfully transitioning high-cost textbooks for Elementary Statistics, Precalculus, and Calculus III courses to no-cost alternatives. This initiative included creating supplemental course materials, such as online practice problems and instructional videos, that were readily accessible to students.
Dr. Chitsonga's research interests encompass assessment in mathematics and statistics, understanding the distinctions between Mathematical and Statistical knowledge, and teachers' pedagogical content knowledge in these disciplines.
