Becky Mercer, Ph.D., is an Associate Dean of Academic Affairs for sciences and mathematics at Palm Beach State College. Previously she served for 5 years as the College's director of STEM education. A Los Angeles native, she holds a bachelor's degree in biological sciences (Spanish minor) from the University of Southern California, and a Ph.D. in metabolic biology from Columbia University. She has a certificate in project management from Florida Atlantic University.
Becky has developed faculty trainings, post-secondary curricula, and community programs to promote success of underrepresented minorities and women in STEM. Becky taught biotechnology and forensic science courses, and has led NSF-funded projects focused on increasing enrollment of minorities and women in STEM fields, including engineering and geosciences. Currently Dr. Mercer is leading the college's NSF-funded $1.5M SATC project (STEM Articulation & Transfer Collaboratie) to increase university transfer and graduation by PBSC students, particularly Hispanics. The program centers on building student competencies in chemistry and math, and culturally-relevant instruction.
