Michelle Bell Boissiere, Ph.D. serves as Head o the Department of Biology at Xavier University of Louisiana. She holds degrees in Biology from Xavier University of Louisiana (B.S.), and from Tulane University (M.S. and Ph.D.). Her dissertation research focused on the function of human sperm membranes. Dr. Boissiere has been a faculty member at Xavier University since 1994. Her primary teaching responsibility centers on Genetics, with an emphasis on Human Genetics.
For six years (1995-2001), Dr. Boissiere served as the Director of BIOSTAR, a summer enrichment program for high school students who are preparing to take their first biology course. From 2001-2003 she served as the inaugural director of Xavier’s Center for Undergraduate Research. Michelle Boissiere served as Chair of the Biology Department for two years (2004 – 2006). She presented training workshops on Xavier University’s Science Education and Pre-Medical Programs at several other institutions and national meetings; included in this list are the American Association of Colleges and Universities Symposium on Undergraduate Science Education, a St. Francis College in Brooklyn Faculty Development Workshop, the Clemson University Best Practices In Black Student Achievement Workshop, and the Bowie State University Faculty Development Conference, and many others. She received training from the National Research Mentoring Network (NRMN) and attended STEM education workshops through the American Association of Colleges and Universities. She participated in several faculty enrichment workshops at New York University’s Faculty Resource Network. In June 2024 she will lead a faculty development seminar on Including Inclusion in STEM Courses for the NYU Faculty Resource Network . She is currently participating the the Keystroke, sponsored by CASL (Center for the Advancement of STEM Leadership). Dr. Boissiere is an advocate for HBCU's and for Diversity in STEM.
